When the combustion gas temperature becomes high, generation of the environment polluting NOx (nitrogen oxides) increases rapidly. Exhaust gas recirculation system is used to decrease the volume of NOx generated. Exhaust gas recirculation system re-circulates exhaust gas inside the inlet manifold. It increases specific heat of the combustion gases and reduces combustion speed to lower the combustion temperature and reduce the volume of NOx generated.
Furthermore, the exhaust gas recirculation cooler lowers the temperature of the exhaust gas in order to enhance the charging efficiency of exhaust gas recirculation.
Engine-ECU calculates the target exhaust gas recirculation amount in accordance with the engine speed and the fuel injection amount. To this value, the following compensations are added in order to calculate an optimal target exhaust gas recirculation amount that suits the driving conditions.
Then, the engine-ECU compares the expected exhaust gas recirculation amount as calculated from the inlet air temperature, inlet manifold pressure, and engine speed with the target exhaust gas recirculation amount. It actuates the exhaust gas recirculation valve so that the expected exhaust gas recirculation attains the target exhaust gas recirculation amount (feedback control).

Engine coolant temperature compensation
Compensation is made according to engine coolant temperature. The lower the engine coolant temperature the greater the exhaust gas recirculation volume.

Initialize control
After the ignition switch turns off, the engine-ECU actuates the exhaust gas recirculation valve from the fully closed position to the fully open position. Then, it records the fully closed/open value learned from the exhaust gas recirculation valve position sensor output signals. The learned values that are recorded will be used for compensation purposes when the exhaust gas recirculation valve is to be actuated subsequently.

EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE POSITION SENSOR
The exhaust gas recirculation valve position sensor is integrated with the exhaust gas recirculation valve.
This exhaust gas recirculation valve position sensor uses Hall IC and is of non-contact type.
Exhaust gas recirculation valve position sensor outputs voltage to engine-ECU based on the exhaust gas recirculation valve opening angle.
Engine-ECU uses this signal to detect stroke of the exhaust gas recirculation valve.

EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (DC MOTOR)
An exhaust gas recirculation valve is installed on inlet manifold.
Exhaust gas recirculation valve is composed of a good response, low energy, and small DC motor with brush and can generate rotation force corresponding to the current applied on the coil.
Engine-ECU changes current direction according to the Open/Close direction and also changes current to the motor coil in order to the control exhaust gas recirculation valve.

EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION COOLER
Exhaust gas recirculation cooler, which is installed between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust gas recirculation valve, is a laminated type.
Exhaust gas recirculation cooler lowers the temperature of the exhaust gas that is recirculated in order to enhance the charging efficiency of exhaust gas recirculation.
Получается, что система ЕГР действует отдельно и независимо от системы впрыска топлива и призвана она только уменьшить выбросы окислов азота в атмосферу, т.е. для соблюдения норм евро-4, которые введены с 2010 года.
Каталитический конвертер может лишь нейтрализовать CO и НС, окислы азота он нейтрализовать не может и не умеет.
Вывод: на 4d56 2010 можно безболезненно глушить этот ЕГР.
Другие моторы надо штудировать....
